This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

We present a dare for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like typical body horror, but beneath Together resides a intense examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
